Your Impact

Resistance & Resilience

We combine urgent defense of frontline communities with long-term systemic change to address the root causes of environmental injustice in Uganda and across Africa.

Four Pillars of Our Strategy

1. Defender Protection

Provide immediate safety support, legal aid, digital security, and relocation assistance to environmental human rights defenders facing threats.

2. Community Resilience

Support frontline communities with climate adaptation, food sovereignty, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable livelihoods programs.

3. Storytelling & Advocacy

Amplify marginalized voices through documentaries, photo essays, testimonies, and strategic campaigns to shift public narrative and policy.

4. Leadership Development

Build the next generation of African climate justice leaders through training bootcamps, mentorship, and youth-led initiatives.

Our Approach

We do not work from a distance. Every program is designed and led by the communities it serves. We combine direct action, legal advocacy, research, and storytelling to challenge powerful interests while building sustainable alternatives from the ground up.

Join the Movement

Whether through volunteering, funding, or partnership — there are many ways to support our strategy for a just and livable future.

Decentralized. Community-Driven. Accountable.

We intentionally operate as a flat, grassroots network — designed to be responsive, transparent, and rooted in the communities we serve.

How We Are Organized

Unlike traditional NGOs with heavy hierarchies, Roots and Rights Initiative functions as a decentralized network. This structure allows us to respond quickly to emergencies faced by environmental defenders and ensures that decisions are guided by those most affected.

  • Core Coordination Team – Small team based in Kampala handling daily operations, legal support, and international communications.
  • Community Advisory Boards – Local leaders from affected regions guide project priorities and strategies.
  • Regional Hubs – Teams across regions coordinate Africa-wide campaigns.
  • Defender Protection Network – Rapid response group supporting at-risk environmental human rights defenders.
  • Youth & Leadership Wing – Young climate justice organizers leading awareness, education, and innovation programs.

The Principles That Guide Our Work

Everything we do is grounded in values that shape our decisions, strengthen our partnerships, and inspire our impact.

🤝

SOLIDARITY

We stand with frontline communities and Indigenous peoples. True environmental justice can only be achieved through genuine solidarity and collective power.

🔍

ACCOUNTABILITY

We hold governments, corporations, and ourselves accountable. Transparency, honesty, and integrity are non-negotiable in all our operations and advocacy.

🌍

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

Communities closest to the harm must lead the solutions. We support community-driven initiatives and amplify local knowledge and leadership.

🌱

FRONTLINE KNOWLEDGE

We respect and center the lived experiences and traditional ecological knowledge of Indigenous peoples and frontline defenders.

⚖️

JUSTICE

We fight for climate, social, and economic justice. Environmental protection must go hand in hand with human rights and equity.

🔄

SUSTAINABILITY

We promote long-term, regenerative solutions that protect our natural world for current and future generations.

Stronger Together

We believe real change happens through solidarity. By working with communities, movements, and organizations across Africa and globally, we amplify frontline voices and increase our collective impact.

Certified Blue Community

Roots & Rights Initiative is a proud member of the international Blue Communities movement — a global network defending water as a public trust.

In Uganda, where wetlands are disappearing and communities lose access to clean water as extractive projects expand, this work is not symbolic. We protect rivers, wetlands, and lakes through direct action, advocacy, and community stewardship.

We engage youth as guardians of water, run community awareness campaigns, and push for water rights to be protected in law and in practice.

Justice Movement Uganda

Our foundational partner. We grew directly from years of joint organizing against destructive extractive projects.

Frontline Communities

Direct collaboration with frontline groups defending ancestral lands and cultural rights in Uganda.

EACOP Justice Network

Regional alliance working across Uganda for TOTAL's accountability and just energy transitions.
